Two public schools, 700 students, and one unwavering belief — that every child in Uyoma deserves the tools to reach the next level.
It began with Kunya Primary School — a community's determination to educate its children. When those children grew and qualified for secondary education, the nearest schools were too far away. So the community built again.
The secondary school was named after Ramogi Achieng Oneko, the Kenyan freedom fighter and politician from this very community. Both schools now stand as public institutions under the Kochar Community Based Organisation, serving 700 students across primary and secondary levels.
"The boarding facility helps students study at night — most do not have electricity at home. Female students especially value it: they can focus on their schoolwork instead of household duties."Prof. Olola Oneko — School Board Member
The first to be built, Kunya Primary laid the foundation. It serves the youngest learners of the Uyoma community in a setting of shared purpose and growing ambition.
Named in honour of Kenya's freedom struggle, the secondary school includes a boarding facility enabling students from distant villages to study safely at night.
The Kochar CBO has already completed toilet facilities and repaired the borehole pump. With outside support, these remaining priorities can become reality.
A permanent clean water solution for both schools beyond the repaired borehole.
On-campus accommodation to attract and retain qualified teachers in this rural area.
Additional space for both schools to reduce overcrowding and meet growing enrolment.
Fully equipped labs for physics, chemistry, and biology — essential for national examinations.
One per school, serving as both digital learning centres and libraries for all students.
A permanent kitchen replacing the temporary one, plus a multipurpose hall for dining and events.
4 new girls' toilets plus renovation of 4 existing teachers' toilets.
Daily nutritious meals to combat malnutrition and improve attendance and concentration.
